The boys team were entering this years competition full of confidence. They had played four games in the build-up and were unbeaten, building a reputation for solid defence and an offense based on the fast break. The starting five of Huko, JJ, Cian, Jigs and Riki was complimented by the ball handling skills of Sam, the pace of Tom and the safe steady approach of Nick and Mahathir.
Against ISKL Blue a massive 40-4 scoreline showed they were the team to beat. Alice Smith proved a tougher test as our usual approach to this fixture meant it was 15-15 with only a few minutes to go. After a time out where Coach Norm put forward a number of suggestions in a somewhat robust manner they closed the game out in commanding fashion. Tenby were an unknown team but beating them fairly easily gave a semi-final match against MKIS.
Although MKIS starting well the steady ball handling from Jigs and consistent rebounding by JJ and Huko soon wore them down and the final game loomed on the horizon against the hosts, ISKL Gold.
In the final it was a close game with the boys up 6-5 at half time. Pleased that they had stopped ISKL from scoring the coach urged the players to relax and start putting points on the board. Both teams were tired so the introduction of Tom was to prove the key to success. Three fast break layups in 30 seconds by Tom broke ISKL and the team relaxed, played some top basketball and won the match 31-14. Play of the tournament was a one-two passage of play between Mahathir and Sam that split their zone for a layup between the two biggest players ISKL had to offer. Cian was again the top scorer but all players showed that no matter if they were starters or came off the bench, they are all capable of playing high quality basketball.
It was a great performance and with a record of played 10 won 10 they are deservedly the champions of KL.
