ISAC BASKETBALL U13 GIRLS CHAMPIONS!!
On Saturday 13rd March 2013 the GIS Girls basketball teams arrived at ISKL ready to cause an upset!
Amazingly GIS had managed to put together not one but two teams! This is a great achievement in itself and the girls in the “yellow” team had a really enjoyable day, the highlight being a win against Nexus A team! Massive thanks to Coach Robyn and Coach Sonia for giving up their time to share their knowledge with the team. What excellent role models we have from GIS! The team approached the day with a really positive attitude and finished a very respectable 6th place.
The first game for the “blue” (playing in yellow team) saw the girls face up to ISKL B team who they beat comfortably and managed to iron out some early confusion about the Key!
Next up was arch rivals Alice Smith. The girls smothered their two main threats and soon the win was inevitable! GIS was able to run the bench and rest everyone and still pull off a respectable score of 16-6.
The third game saw us face up against a somewhat taller Tenby team but one which should have been easily overcome. However, the ball would not drop through the hoop! Despite Tenby taking an early lead the girls really came back in the second half but luck was not our side and we could not overhaul their early lead, despite them not scoring at all in the second half!
These results left us top of the group table based on goal difference with 3 teams all tied on points.
So into the semi final we went, feeling somewhat deflated, tired and de-motivated. The team struggled to find their flow, but untidy as it was – a win is a win and the girls had done what they needed to do to make the final.
The final. GIS v’s ISKL, (the home team!)
After a good PEP talk, the girls took to the court ready for action! GIS were definitely the underdogs having lost in two friendlies against the same team. However, the girls dug deep and found the fighter in them! They went out hard and despite ISKL scoring first they quickly built a 6 point lead. The ISKL team were frustrated, when they couldn’t break through the GIS half court press. Every member of the GIS team played their best, everyone contributed and between them they extended the lead to 12 points! With the ISKL bench and the home fans screaming them on the game began to get frantic. A time out for GIS allowed the girls to catch their breath and realize that none of that noise was pressure on them…. All they had to do was enjoy the game and the lead that they had secured!
As the minutes and seconds counted down, we began to believe it was actually going to happen and as the final buzzer sounded the GIS team were united in a group celebration! Final score GIS 24 ISKL 14. Even better, it soon became apparent that the boys team also had good news and the joint celebration was fantastic!
The achievement of the day is not in the gold medal, but in the fact that the girls found their motivation when it really mattered! They acted like true champions rising to the challenge and peaking at precisely the right time. The girls can now move on feeling fully prepared for the FOBISSEA Games in a few weeks.
