Five Star Dante Leads Garden Medal Charge at the KL ISAC Athletics Championships

Garden International School’s Primary Athletics Team produced a number of fantastic performances to bag a large haul of medals at the recent ISAC Athletics Championships, which were held at the Bangi Sports Complex on Saturday 2nd March.

Although there where many highlights on the morning, Dante was Garden’s stand out performer with a phenomenal five gold medals from five different events; a record performance by one athlete at these Championships. Four Championship records were also broken on a successful morning for GIS.

Leading up to this major meeting, over 180 children had regularly been attending our CCA Athletics Club on a Monday afternoon and many of our budding track and field stars were given a chance to represent the school as we set up two athletics meetings leading up to the ISAC Championships; a home fixture to Alice Smith and an away fixture to Mont Kiara.

Amongst the many dazzling performances in our first fixture against Alice Smith were 60m/200m doubles for both Dante (Under 11 Boys) and Maya (Under 10 Girls). Both athletes then went on to record wins as part of their mixed 4 x 200m relay teams as well as the long jump and standing triple jumps respectively. Other impressive runs came from Year 3 starlet Marcus, who edged out Joshua to complete a Garden 1-2 placing in the Under 9 Boys 60m and Mahdee, winner of the Under 9 Boys 200m. Year 5 endurance star Nalini narrowly defeated Carlotta and Lauren in a Garden 1-2-3 in the Under 10 Girls 400m whilst Edward was another GIS athlete who paced his race to perfection with a dominant performance in the Under 9 Boys 400m. Endurance stars Anaelle and Jack led from start to finish to win their respective Under 11 Boys and Girls 800m races to cap off an outstanding afternoon for GIS.

In our second fixture against Mont Kiara, GIS took a team of close to 90 athletes and many were taking part in their first ever competitive athletics event. Race after race, GIS continued to give their all and a flurry of blue vests continued to dominate every event. We are really grateful to MKIS to for allowing us to bring such a large number of children over to their school and for hosting a fantastic event.

A squad of 40 children were selected to compete in our season ending athletics fixture, the ISAC Championships, which sees the top International Schools in KL face off against each other. The first race of the morning was the Under 11 Girls 800m and cross country star Anaelle got Garden off to the best possible start leading the field from start to finish to take a well deserved gold; her time of 2:46.25 was a new Championship Record. The time would have also seen her medal in the boys Under 11 Race. She recovered quickly to win a silver medal in the Under 11 Girls 200m just 45 minutes later. The second race of the day then saw Garden claim both first and second. Jack continued his outstanding form to blitz the field in the Under 11 Boys 800m to bag gold whilst a late surge over the last 50m from the ever-improving Denis, who is still in Year 5, ensured a thoroughly deserved silver.

Two wins in the opening two races set the tone for a string of outstanding performances throughout the rest of the day. Three other championship records were set including Megan in the Shot (5.86m), Kristina in the High Jump (1.29m) whilst the relay quartet of Joshua, Marcus, Ishan and Mahdee ran a dazzling 66.8 seconds to  the Under 9 Boys 4 x 100m.

But it was Dante who stole the show with a sensational five gold medals from five different events. A 100m/200m superb sprint double was followed by a huge 4.19m Long Jump for his first three victories. In the 4 x 100m Garden were trailing in third place before Dante took the baton on the last leg. Within 20m he had not only closed the gap on his nearest rivals, he had given Garden a clear lead. The High Jump was Dante’s last event and he was pushed all the way by Harun and Jack (who both scored bronze medals in this event) to complete his record breaking achievement.

Among the many other highlights for Garden were a clean medal sweep in the Under 9 Boys 50m by Kristian (Gold), Marcus (Silver) and Joshua (Bronze) and a blistering first lace from Mahdee in the Under 9 Boys 200m. Many of those who didn’t medal still gave their best and several produced personal best performances. These included Danial in the Under 11 Boys Shot Put, whose 6.72m was just 29cm off claiming a medal.

Our fantastic primary team left the stadium having had a superb morning of athletics; I was certainly proud of all their efforts.

A massive thank you to all the positive parent support we had on the day and also to Mrs Parkin for providing all of our superstar athletes with Fru-t-pops!

Mr I Deeth
