U13 Boys Basketball FOBISSEA 2013
At this years competition the boys basketball was held on the last day of the tournament. There were some tired players but as the Dragons were the ISAC Champions, the opportunity to win The Double gave them the energy for one last big effort. We had a plan for this tournament and the plan was simple…..Win.
The first game was against Alice Smith, the only team to give us any problems at ISAC. After soundly beating them morale was high and we were ready for the match with Tanglin Trust School. They were well organised but the speed of Cian and the rebounding of JJ and Huko proved too much as the boys moved to a played two won two record.
Injuries were now becoming a worry with Huko damaging his foot playing football, Siddhesh somehow managing to knee Sam in the head and Cian, despite being a top player still falling over two or three times a game!
Patana were next and a strong start by us saw their coach getting a little bit upset with his players. After a time-out Patana started to play well and by the end of the third quarter we found ourselves behind for the first time. The last quarter however was superb. JJ gave the Patana forwards a lesson in rebounding and our fast break finally won the game 24 – 21. We were now two games from accomplishing the plan but the heat was beginning to take its toll as cramp seemed to be the new team hobby.
The hosts Jakarta were next and they had not played well all tournament. I said to the team that as soon as we get a good lead I will take the starters off so they can rest for the final match against Harrow and give the bench a chance to play. We went 8 – 0 up after 90 seconds. Bench on! Riki had been running for the past three days and really needed a break so the time came for Jordan to step up…and he did.
Another solid defensive performance by the team had given us a played four won four record with only Harrow left. Harrow had beaten us in the semi-finals last year by 1 point so it was fitting that our chance for Gold would hinge on this game.
That last game was the best performance of the whole tournament, probably the whole season. Harrow were not even close. JJ won the tipoff (he never lost one all tournament), Cian scored on the fast break and we were 10 – 0 up after 5 minutes. By the second quarter we were still on top but players were tiring. Jigs had his best game as an U13 player, handling the ball well and running the offense superbly. On defence Jigs, Riki and Sam closed down their outside shot and with Huko and JJ pulling down all the rebounds the game was won by the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter gave us a chance to give everyone time on the court. Siddhesh and Jordan came on, the team kept scoring, Harrow still couldn’t get a shot off and as the buzzer went it was cheers and smiles all round.
The Boys U13 Basketball had won FOBISSEA Gold. It was a brilliant tournament with the Dragons once again going undefeated. They scored more and conceded less points than any other team and they did it with a fast paced offense, solid defence and strength in depth that meant whatever combination of players were on the court, we still came out on top.
A superb display throughout the tournament, the boys thoroughly deserve to be called FOBISSEA Champions, Gold Medal Winners 2013!
